Programme Type: Student-led Project
The Physical Activity and Sport Enterprise (PhASE) is a unique approach to learning and to the delivery of a high quality sports development service. Students at the University own, manage and develop PhASE, which is a one-member one-vote enterprise. Each year the students elect a Board of Directors who oversee PhASE activity, which has in the past included Easter and Summer sports camps, tournaments and events, and the hugely successful Healthy Lifestyles after-school programme. In 2009-2010 Healthy Lifestyles ran at the former Hardwick Sports Centre in Cheltenham, and is now hosted at a number of Gloucester City Primary Schools.
PhASE has proved to be hugely successful in developing sport and physical activity in North Gloucestershire, and has also served as a superb preparation for those seeking permanent employment in the sports development sector. Many previous Board members – Julia Ladbrooke, Chris Peach, Joby Hobbs, Kate Preston, Roger Goodwin and Justine Naylor for example – are now in senior positions in the sports industry, while many others have gone on to achieve first class degrees and moved on to postgraduate study.
PhASE is a key element of the BSc and MA Sports Development programmes at the University.
