Job Opportunities and Careers Information

Careers Centre

The Careers Centre helps our students while they are studying with us and for three years after they have graduated. We work with students whatever stage they are at in their career planning – whether they want to talk over specific career ideas or they are not sure where to start!

We provide free advice and guidance on all aspects of career planning, to help ensure a smooth transition from undergraduate study into further study or the world of work. We work closely with Student Helpzones and with academic departments where our staff provide an input in to lecture programmes.

As one of our students or recent graduates, you will be able to book individual appointments for one-to-one advice and get help with CVs, job applications and interview technique. You can use the Careers Centre Information Room and our range of web- based careers resources to research graduate careers, further study and employment.

Our team of careers consultants  encourage students to come and make use of the Careers Centre at any stage of their  studies and appointments are available daily (Mon - Fri) at the Careers Centre and on a regular basis at all campuses. We also offer a very popular online guidance service where students can email a careers adviser.

The university’s careers centre was successfully re-accredited to the Matrix standard in February 2009. The Matrix quality standard is a national award for information, advice and guidance services and is only awarded after an independent assessment of the service provided, including feedback from users.

Work Placements

Many of our courses require you to undertake a supervised work placement, which can be paid or unpaid. This allows you to put the skills you learn in your course into practice and prepares you for life in the workplace after you graduate.

You may find yourself working with high-profile companies such as IBM, British Airways, Motorola and Disney. Our Placements Office will help you find the best business or organisations for your work placement. A large number of our placement providers subsequently offer these students graduate positions.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

The university has an excellent record in completing successful Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). These are two year projects that allow graduates to work in industry on projects of strategic value to a company. KTPs are funded by the UK government and industry partners. Typical projects are development of new products or marketing strategy or the introduction of new information systems.

The university has completed over 25 of these projects in the past three years, and received above average gradings from the UK government on project outcomes.

Jobshop

While studying with us, you may want to take on a part time job. The Students’ Unions  has its own 'Jobshop' to help you find part-time or temporary work, as well as employing over 60 regular student staff members to help run our services.
