Marketing and Strategy 

Core members of the Marketing & Strategy research group are Colin Clarke-Hill, Barry Davies, Janine Dermody, Stuart Hanmer-Lloyd, Peter Jones, Marin Marinov, Philippa Ward and Christine Williams. Early career researchers associated with the group include: Ai-Ling Lai, Chantal Laws, Jenny Lloyd, Paul Hopkinson, Nadine Sulkowski, Natalia Tolstikova and Judy Zhu. Experienced researchers who have left in the period for senior appointments elsewhere are: Halliday, Marinova, Palmer and Willis.

The core members have been active in terms of publications producing six books, ten book chapters, over 130 journal articles and more than 40 conference papers in the period. The early career researchers have been encouraged to develop research outputs initially in the form of conference papers and a number have also produced journal pieces.

Staff have also active editorships. Davies co-edits the International Journal of Management Cases, and is on the editorial boards of: Journal of Services Marketing; Services Business: an International Journal; Journal of European and Mediterranean Business and International Journal of Management Decision. Clarke-Hill served until recently on the editorial board for European Business Review. Marinov is on the board for the Journal of Euro-Marketing. He is Regional Editor for Southeast Europe of Journal of East-West Business. Dermody and Davies also guest edited the Journal of Marketing Management (vol.20, iss.5/6). Clarke-Hill also jointly guest edited two editions of the International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management; Vol. 31, 3, 2003 and Vol. 31, 7, 2003.

Staff (Clarke-Hill, Davies, Dermody, Hanmer-Lloyd, Marinov, Ward) act regularly as referees for a wide range of journals (European Journal of Marketing, European Business Review International Review of Retail, Distribution and Consumer Research, International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing, International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Nonprofit and Public Sector Marketing, Omega, Psychology and Marketing, Politics and Policy, Service Industries Journal) and for a number of research-awarding bodies, including the ESRC (Davies).

The group have hosted the European Association of Education and Research in Commercial Distribution 2002; International Colloquium on Relationship Marketing 2003 and the Marketing and Entrepreneurship Interface 2003, Academy of Marketing 2004, Political Marketing Special Interest Group 2005.

In addition to hosting conferences, members have been involved as participants in organizing and scientific committees elsewhere. For example: Clarke-Hill, Czech Marketing Association: New trends in marketing 2006; Davies, European Association of Education and Research in Commercial Distribution Paris 2003; Dermody, Political Marketing Conference Bath 2004. Marinov has acted as track chair of the World Business Congress on Business in Transition Economies since 2000. He was Congress co-chair in 2001 when he delivered a keynote speech at the opening session. In addition Marinov has also organized and chaired special panel and discussion sessions at various conferences and congresses, e.g. AIB 2002, World Marketing 2003, IFSAM World Congress 2003, EIBA 2004. A number of members (Clarke-Hill, Davies, Dermody, Hanmer-Lloyd, Hopkinson, Ward) regularly review for the Academy of Marketing.

Members of the research group have also given invited conference addresses:

  • Clarke-Hill: Regional Club of the Czech Marketing Association, Liberec, Feb 2006;
  • Davies: Services Marketing Workshop University of Liverpool 2003, Academy of Marketing 2004, Gloucestershire County Council, 2004 and 2006, Parliament of the European Union South-West England Regional Conference Taunton 2006;
  • Dermody and Hanmer-Lloyd: Goldsmiths College 2003, Eccles Centre for American Studies (British Library) and The Haworth Press Series in Political Marketing, London, March 2004, Political Marketing Conference London, House of Lords 2005;
  • Marinov: World Business Congress 2001.

There has also been consultancy activity with UK and overseas firms: for example Davies and Ward worked with Musgrave of Ireland on the acquisition of a UK listed company, Budgens; collaborated with Comet on the investigation of store environments. Ward has worked alongside the NAAFI in Germany and Aldi in the UK. Clarke-Hill has advised the Gloucestershire Constabulary on aspects of benchmarking and police performance. Dermody and Hanmer-Lloyd have advised Cheltenham Tenants Federation on marketing and research issues and Dermody has worked with X-TEK Systems Ltd on its marketing strategy.
