Participation in Sport and Active Recreation in Gloucestershire - summary 2008

Working with Active Gloucestershire, Colin Baker and Chris Owens have analysed data gathered by Sport England in the first Active People Survey (2005-2006). The survey has gathered nationwide evidence on key performance indicators relating to adult participation in sport and active recreation. Local data for the key performance indicators has been compiled in a summary of sport and active recreation in Gloucestershire.

The summary presents data in an informative and useful format and is intended as a resource for local authority officers and health professionals that might be seeking information on local participation rates in sport and physical activity within the county. The summary also provides a useful resource for health, sport, leisure, fitness and exercise organisations and professionals, schools and colleges, and local recreation and sports groups.

Key findings:

  • KPI 1: The percentage of the adult population participating in at least 30 minutes of sport and active recreation (including walking and cycling) of at least moderate intensity on at least 3 days a week.
22.3% of the adult population in Gloucestershire undertake at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity sport and active recreation 3 times per week in relation to 21.9% in the South West region.
  • KPI 2: The percentage of the adult population involved in at least one hour of volunteer work per week to support sporting activity.
5.0% of the adult population in Gloucestershire undertake at least one hour of volunteering to sport each week. This is in comparison to 5.2% of the South West region.
  • KPI 3: The percentage of the adult population who are members of a sports club or club where they do sport.
Club membership stands at 25.9% in Gloucestershire in comparison to 24.4% in the South West region.
  • KPI 4: The percentage of the adult population who have received tuition from an instructor or coach.
18.7% of the adult population have received tuition from an instructor or coach in the last 12 months. This is slightly higher than 18.4% of the adult population in the South West region.
  • KPI 5: The percentage of the adult population who have taken part in organised competitive sport.
In Gloucestershire 16.8% of adults take part in competitive sport compared to 16.2% of adults in the South West region.
  • KPI 6: The percentage of the adult population that are satisfied or very satisfied with sports provision in their local area.
71.5% of the adult population in Gloucestershire were satisfied with sports provision in their local area, which is above the figure for the South West of 70.5%.

Participation in Sport and Active Recreation in Gloucestershire - updated summary 2009

Building on the results of the first Active People Survey (2006-2007), Colin Baker and Chris Owens have been commissioned by Active Gloucestershire to analyse the findings of the second Active People Survey (2007-2008). Locally there has been little change in the KPI scores identified in the initial summary and it is apparent that efforts must be sustained to get more people more active, more often. These are presented in full in the 2009 update.

National results demonstrate:

  • In 2007/08, 6.85 million adults (aged 16 and over) participated in sport three times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity (16.5%). In 2005/6, this figure was 6.3 million adults (15.5%), so there has been a statistically significant increase of 552,000 adult participants in the two years between 2005/06 and 2007/08.
  • Participation among females has increased from 2.57 million (12.3 %) to 2.81 million (13.2 %), an increase of 240,000 over 2 years.
  • Participation among adults from lower socio-economic groups (NS-SEC 5-8) has increased by 100,000 from 1.81 million (11.8%) to 1.91 million (12.7%).
  • There are now over 2 million adults in England (age 16 and over) who volunteer in sport for at least one hour a week. This has increased by 125,000 between 2005/6 and 2007/8 (from 1.92 million adults to 2.04 million adults)
  • There has been no change in the percentage of the adult population who have received tuition between 2005/6 and 2007/8
  • The level of satisfaction with sports provision has decreased, as has participation in organised competitive sport.
