Dr Alison Scott-Baumann is Reader in Cultural Hermeneutics, and England representative for the ‘Ricoeur Foundation’ in Paris, reflecting international work as a Ricoeur scholar. Her major research interests lie in philosophy and application of philosophy to social justice projects, including over ten years of work with British Muslim groups. This includes work in developing partnerships with Markfield Institute of Higher Education, Al Mahdi Institute and Ebrahim Community College. She is trustee of Kashmir Education Foundation (UK) and works in Pakistan on girls’ education and teacher training for women. Recent and current research includes a project on global citizenship funded by Department For  International Development (DFID 2000-2003), and serving as a member of the working party for Islam at Universities in England, commissioned by Bill Rammell, Minister of State, and chaired by Dr Siddiqui (2006-7).  Recently Alison was invited by Hazel Blears, Minister of State, to co-chair a research review of Muslim Faith Leader Training in UK (2008-9). She has a secondary interest in the work of Iris Murdoch. In August 2009 Alison’s book ‘Ricoeur and the hermeneutics of suspicion’ will be published by Continuum. In 2010 Alison’s co-edited anthology of new scholars’ work on Iris Murdoch will be published by the USA publishing house McFarlane.

Alison is the EdD Programme Leader in the Department of Education.

Current PGR Supervision

5 PhD students including Christian church community work and continental Philosophy and a studentship on research with British Muslim women.
