University Research Grants Allocated
The University has made Research Grant awards to the following proposals.

Exercise and Sport Research: Building capacity & Investing in the future (Prof. Andrew Parker).
This project intends, through the creation of postgraduate assistant bursaries, to put in place an enhanced research/data collection programme and to create capacity for future research income generation by supporting science projects with a strong social and economic impact.

The Mobile University: Developing and evaluating mobile phone applications to support and enhance research and scholarly activity. (Dr. Kevin Hapeshi).
The aim of this study is to research, develop and evaluate a wide range of applications (apps) for mobile and portable technologies in order to enhance research and scholarly activity. Technologies will include ‘smart’ mobile phones (iPhones, Android phones, Blackberry, etc.) and pads (iPad and Android Pads eBooks) as well as laptops and netbooks. In addition to the research benefits for the University in the computing subject area, the project will also provide potential for commercial exploitation.

‘Land, Cultural Heritage and Identity’. (Dr Iain Robertson).
Part of  a broader project on the ‘Glasgow Gaels’ in development with colleagues within and without the University, this research programme will analyse questions and aspects of the construction of visual cultural identity. This phased collaborative study incorporates beneficial opportunities for transferable application and will also help to build capacity in Technology Enhanced Learning.

‘Citizen Science for Conservation: New Directions for Local and Global Approaches’ (Dr Anne Goodenough, Dr Adam Hart, Dr Rick Stafford).
This project builds on existing work by the Biology research group in the fields of applied conservation, population biology and sustainability. It aims to develop methods for automated identification of species (and specific individuals within a species) from photographic images harvested from multiple sources and networks, including those provided by the general public.

Research News will be following each of the projects and providing regular updates on progress as the projects develop.

New ESRC award on 'Sustainable Flood Memory' for the Centre for the Study of Floods and Communities
An interdisciplinary  team of Professor Lindsey McEwen (Principal Investigator, Department of Natural and Social Sciences) with Owain Jones (Countryside and Community Research Institute), Jo Garde-Hansen (Centre of Media, Memory and Community) and Iain Robertson (Humanities; all Co-investigators) has secured an ESRC award for research into sustainable flood memory.

The project is entitled: ‘Sustainable flood memories and the development of community resilience to future flood risk: a comparative study of three recently flooded communities’.  The grant is for £242K and will run over 30 months.

Professor Lindsey McEwen (Centre for the Study of Floods and Communities, University of Gloucestershire) said:  ‘This innovative interdisciplinary research project provides an excellent opportunity to build on the Centre’s innovative research into how communities live with changing flood risk, and in exploring new approaches to building community flood resilience.  Key stakeholders in flood risk management including the Environment Agency and Local Authorities will be involved in the research process to ensure the research impact is maximised’.
