What is Games Art BSc (Hons)?

Design stunning characters and immersive worlds for computer games that you and others would love to play. Learn how to turn your imagination and creativity into visually appealing interactive experiences for commercial use.

With access to our purpose built labs, equipped with high-end hardware and industry software – 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Tools, Adobe CC, Unity, Unreal and much more – you’ll be able to bring to life incredible worlds, dynamic characters and engaging game prototypes from your imagination. You’ll get first class support from our industry-experienced lecturers who have worked on games for Sony, Adidas, Intel, Crytek, 2K Sports, Rebellion, Eutechnyx and Headstrong Games.

Study style

You’ll learn through practical experience with supporting lectures and workshops. You’ll start by learning and exploring all aspects of design and production of game art, with the opportunity to tailor your modules to your specific strengths and career objectives while you progress. All modules are assessed through coursework, so you can build a strong visual portfolio.

You’ll be taught through hands-on practical sessions, underpinned by visual design principles and traditional 2D and 3D visualisation techniques, a range of skills including – 3D modelling, animation, digital sculpting, material & texture authoring, interface design, modular design, character art, concept art, procedural content production and observational drawing.

You’ll work both on your own and in teams with our games programming and design students. You’ll gain real-world experience and produce an extensive portfolio of artwork, playable games and prototypes – offering you the perfect springboard into the industry.

UoG is a PlayStation First partner which means you’ll have access to the same development hardware that game studios use to create ground-breaking, innovative games on PlayStation.

Entry requirements

    • 96 – 120 UCAS tariff points, CCC – BBB at A levels, MMM – DDM at BTEC, or a Merit in your T-Level.

      Entry to this course is by interview. Check out our Interview Guide to learn what to expect and help you prepare.

    • English Language or Literature and Maths Grade 4/C in GCSE (or equivalent) are normally required.

    • We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants, although some entry requirements may still apply for Professionally Accredited Courses. We accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas and make offers on an individual basis.

Trips and experiences

Field trips to Rebellion, Neon Play and Microsoft Horizon have offered a rare look behind the scenes of how studios develop their games and opportunities to work on live briefs.

For our yearly GameX Conference we’ve had guest speakers from renowned studios such as Rebellion, Remedy Entertainment, Codemasters and Microsoft Rare. ComX, our end of year show, is regularly visited by people from game studios such as Neon Play, Unity Technologies and Playground Game to look at student work and discuss employment opportunities.

Placements

  • Duration – 12 months, full-time (minimum 35 hours a week)
  • Location – popular destinations include the UK, USA, China and Europe
  • Visa – you may need a visa if you’re on placement abroad
  • Finance – your tuition fee is reduced for your placement year – and you can still apply for a maintenance loan and get money advice
  • Placement support – we’ll help you find a great placement and get the most out of the experience
