Course overview

This course provides you with specialist skills to drive the mechanical innovations required by modern industry. You’ll explore the very latest approaches to mechatronics – designing systems with built-in intelligence, enabling machines to adapt to ever-changing data inputs and demands.

You’ll examine new developments in the Internet of Things (IoT) era – the growing interconnection of smart devices, sensors and digital systems, able to transfer data without human input. These advances are leading to a revolutionary phase in industrial development, Industry 4.0, creating new levels of automation, monitoring and self-diagnosis.

The course equips you with knowledge of mechatronics, robotics and engineering design and management. You’ll learn how to make best use of data inputs to create smart factories, as well as how people interact with these processes. You’ll also see how industry’s increasing dependence on connectivity is creating new vulnerabilities, particularly the cyber security risks associated with automation.

Find out more about the other engineering courses we offer and our committment to STEM.

You’ll gain fundamental knowledge while developing the specialist skills you need for a career in modern engineering. You’ll then have the chance to put these skills into practice in local and national industry.

This course is available to study with an integrated foundation year – an extra, introductory year at the beginning of the full degree. If you don’t meet the stated entry requirements or you’re returning to education, it could be a great option that enables you to study this course.

As well as an introduction to your subject, it will help you to develop valuable study skills, and communication, teamwork and problem-solving techniques, giving you the confidence and skills set you need to progress.

If you’re applying to study as an international student, an integrated foundation year can also support you to improve your English language skills alongside your studies.

To apply for this course with an integrated foundation year, select the ‘With foundation year’ study type from the options at the top of this page before clicking ‘Apply’.
