Rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2015, our programme will allow you to become part of our long-standing heritage in training teachers since 1847. All of our undergraduate primary initial teacher training courses prepare you well for a career in primary teaching, and your choice of route enables you to graduate with a distinctive set of skills.

You will not only graduate as a qualified teacher, but you will also have the skills to become outstanding in your chosen career path. Covering both Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 National Curriculum, you will also specialise in two subjects: a core (English, maths or science) and a foundation such as history or art. This means you can progress to become a subject leader in the area you are passionate about.

We provide our students with exceptional support, specialist subject expertise and a network of over 400 schools for first-rate placement opportunities. We are also rated at 100% for overall student satisfaction (NSS 2019) and we boast high graduate employment rates.

What Ofsted says about the course:

  • ‘The outcomes for trainees are outstanding’
  • We have an ‘Outstanding reputation for providing the quality and type of teachers that schools in the area need and want’
  • We provide 'Thoughtfully designed, innovative training provided by the university in liaison with partner schools'
  • You will 'Gain deeper understanding about how children learn, behave and develop'
  • We have an 'Impressive range of teaching methods, strategies and approaches'.

School placements are a core part of the course. A large proportion of our partner schools are graded Ofsted ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’. This means you will benefit from working alongside teachers of exceptionally high standards. From city to village schools, you will experience a range of classroom environments. As you progress through the course, you will delve deeper into your specialism of working with Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 pupils and become part of a distinct and rewarding teaching group.

You will also have opportunities to engage with pupils who speak English as an additional language and work with children with special educational needs. You will graduate as a well-rounded Early Years and Key Stage 1 teacher, ready to inspire young minds.

Our education community includes a network of school teachers and personnel. You will benefit from a university-based personal tutor and a school-based placement mentor. We work closely with our partner schools, where our students often gain their first teaching posts, and our mentors provide excellent guidance.

Study style

Academic modules are studied through a mix of whole cohort lectures and smaller group workshops and seminars. You will spend a minimum of 120 days in a school or early years setting, putting theory into practice. This will be through blocks of placement weeks throughout the three years of the course. Lectures focus on developing your subject knowledge and pedagogy, and are carefully structured around your increasing understanding of practice from placement experiences. The emphasis on professionalism throughout the course prepares you to become an excellent teacher.

Alongside work placements and lectures, you will develop skills through field trips and off-campus activities, exploring creative lesson planning in the locality. A range of additional experiences are available to you during your studies, for example, volunteering in local primary schools, at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, and with Waterstones bookshop providing story time sessions for children.
