Primary Education with QTS BEd (Hons)

University of Gloucestershire

What is Primary Education with QTS BEd (Hons)?

This programme will allow you to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS) and become part of our long-standing heritage in training teachers since 1847. You’ll be well prepared for a career in primary teaching, with a distinctive set of skills based on the route you choose on your UCAS application:

  • Primary Education with QTS (FS/KS1, ages 3-7)
  • Primary Education with QTS (KS1/KS2, ages 5-11)
  • Primary Education with QTS (Maths, ages 5-11)

Our Primary Education with QTS BEd (Hons) course scored 95% for academic support in the National Student Survey 2023 and our education courses are ranked in the top 15 in the UK for teaching and student satisfaction by the Guardian Good University Guide 2023.

We provide our students with exceptional support, specialist subject expertise and a network of over 400 schools for first-rate placement opportunities that lead to high graduate employment rates. A large proportion of our partner schools are graded Ofsted ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ – so you’ll work alongside teachers of exceptionally high standards.

We were founded as a teaching college 175 years ago, and were reaccredited for the delivery of Initial Teacher Training in 2022 following the introduction of new quality requirements by the government.

You’ll learn through lectures and smaller-group workshops and seminars – while gaining experience on school placements. From city to village schools or early years settings, you’ll experience a range of classroom environments over a minimum of 120 days. You’ll put theory into practice on blocks of placement weeks throughout the three years of the course. Lectures focus on developing your subject knowledge and pedagogy, and are carefully structured around your increasing understanding of practice from placement experiences. The emphasis on professionalism throughout the course prepares you to become an excellent teacher.

You’ll also develop skills by undertaking collaborative, specialist teaching and exploring creative lesson planning and delivery. Our education community includes a network of school teachers and personnel, and you’ll benefit from a university-based Personal Tutor and a school-based Placement mentor. We work closely with our partner schools, where our students often gain their first teaching posts, and our mentors provide excellent guidance.

It’s planned that this course will be taught at UoG’s new campus in Gloucester city centre from September 2025. This provides time to ensure a smooth transition and familiarisation with the new facilities for all.

The vibrant campus will be at the heart of the regeneration of Gloucester city centre. It will bring an iconic building back to life as a modern centre for teaching, learning and community partnerships, through placements, research and outreach activity, and provide cutting-edge facilities for your course.

As you progress through the course, you’ll delve deeper into your specialism of working with Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 pupils, or Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils (with the possibility of maths as an additional focus) and become part of a distinct and rewarding teaching group.

Become outstanding in your chosen path

Not only will you graduate as a qualified teacher, you’ll also have the skills to become outstanding in your chosen career path.
