The MSci Sport Coaching Science Integrated degree aims to develop your understanding of the dynamic and complex interactions which exist within the coaching environment. You will investigate the science behind performance for athletes and coaches, whilst developing vital coaching skills.

This programme explores key pathways in pedagogy, leadership and coaching sciences such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, ethics, and performance analysis, offering opportunities to explore theoretical and practical issues throughout.  The course will provide you with an insightful awareness of how theory, from a range of areas, can both inform and be informed by practice in order to develop your critical and innovative problem-solving abilities. With Professional Practice at our core you will have a variety of opportunities to acquire qualifications associated with different National Governing Bodies, alongside your study.

Your engagement with practical sessions, placements and the application of your knowledge will be a fundamental part of your journey as you strive towards being an outstanding practitioner and coaching scientist. Core to your experience will be your own and others coaching practice. You will develop relevant employability skills throughout the course and a focus on placements at various levels of the degree will support your exploration of real-world experiences.

This interdisciplinary nature of excelling in sport performance comes to the fore in your final year and through your Masters level dissertation.  As a Masters graduate, your range of experiences, theoretical knowledge and practical application will position you at the forefront of the industry and will be used as a foundation for future employment.

A 4-year degree leading to a Masters qualification; the MSci gives you the opportunity to study for 4 years, with the first 3 years alongside the BSc (Hons) degree cohort.  Your fourth year is a seamless progression to Masters level to gain the knowledge and skills for a more advanced career. Dedicated consultancy placements within elite contexts build the foundations for success.

Study style

Core knowledge, understanding and skills are acquired via lectures, seminars, theoretically grounded practical work, guided independent reading and on-line activities, individual tutorial support and independent practical research.
Intellectual thinking skills are nurtured explicitly through lectures and seminars and further developed through the learning activities and through reflection on feedback.
For the MSci Sport Coaching Science, subject specific skills of practical research are developed through lectures, seminars and practical work across all levels, and in particular through the final year investigation wherein students work largely independently but receive tutorial support. Subject specific skills, including techniques of coaching and intervention relating to the application of science to performance settings are developed throughout the course.
