{"id":47625,"date":"2023-01-18T12:19:24","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T12:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/?post_type=case_study&#038;p=47625"},"modified":"2023-01-18T12:21:44","modified_gmt":"2023-01-18T12:21:44","slug":"cassia-wins-penguin-cover-design-award","status":"publish","type":"case_study","link":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/story\/cassia-wins-penguin-cover-design-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Cassia wins Penguin Cover Design Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\" extra-pt\"><strong>University of Gloucestershire student Cassia Samson has been awarded first place at the highly prestigious Penguin Cover Design Awards showcasing the creativity and imagination of the next generation of designers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Cassia, who is studying for a degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/course\/grd-ba-graphic-design\/\">Graphic Design<\/a> within the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/courses\/academic-schools\/school-of-arts\/\">School of Arts<\/a>, won the major publishing house\u2019s Children\u2019s Book Cover category after impressing the judging panel with her design (pictured below) for <em>Murder Most Unladylike.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The book\u2019s author Robin Stevens, who was on the judging panel, said: \u201cThis has so many wonderful details. I love the lettering of the title, the bright colour palette and the way it showcases the friendship and connection between my two heroines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe cover reads as both a school story and a children&#8217;s murder mystery, and I can really see where it would sit in bookshops. Well done!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Previously called the Student Design Award, the 2022 Penguin Cover Design Awards were open to those studying on any further or higher education course and attracted more than 1,500 entries,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cmsr-web-assets.glos.ac.uk\/sites\/129\/2022\/07\/05071718\/Cassia-Samsons-winning-design-at-the-2022-Penguin-Book-Cover-Awards.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of a book\" class=\"wp-image-129000003963\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Cassia said: \u201c\u2018I am so pleased to have won the award. It was a great opportunity and a fun creative project that was something different for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOne of my favourite parts of the book were the notes written by the character of Hazel, which brought a sense of fun. As the book is written in Hazel\u2019s perspective, her note-taking role is an integral part of the story and narrative, so my concept stemmed from that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe focus of the cover concept is the note and paper. With the papers falling from her briefcase, it sets up Hazel&#8217;s role, indulging in the sense of mystery with her \u2018PRIVATE\u2019 book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI wanted the illustration to reflect the 1930s when it is set, inspired by covers of Enid Blyton\u2019s books.
