One of the biggest highlights has been the opportunity to teach a wide range of students, from grammar school classes to nurture groups within mainstream settings. This variety has helped me develop a more flexible and inclusive approach to teaching. My motivation to become a teacher began during my time as a teaching assistant (TA), where I worked closely with small groups of students. Building on this during my placements, I have been able to teach small groups myself, which has strengthened my confidence and confirmed that teaching is the right career path for me.

The course has been demanding, particularly in terms of workload, but I have found it manageable through effective time management and organisation. The structure of the PGCE supports this well, with deadlines that are spaced appropriately around teaching commitments. Confidence has been an area I have continued to develop; although I began with some confidence from my previous role as a TA, this has grown significantly through my teaching practice. I have faced challenging classes at times, but with the support of both placement staff and university tutors, I have been able to reflect, adapt, and improve my practice. These experiences have contributed greatly to my resilience and professional growth.

As I near the end of the course, I feel much more confident in my abilities and in the type of teacher I am becoming. I aim to be an approachable and supportive teacher who values inclusive teaching, ensuring that all students feel welcome and able to succeed in the classroom. Some of my favourite moments have been when a student finally understands a concept, seeing that moment when it ‘clicks’ and their face lights up is incredibly rewarding. I have recently secured a teaching position after my first interview, which is both exciting and slightly nerve-wracking as it is a new school environment. However, the warm welcome I received from staff has reassured me that I will be able to settle in and continue developing as a teacher in a supportive setting.”

Read more about Rhys’ course, PGCE Secondary Mathematics, or discover more about our other PGCE Secondary courses.
