In leading-edge laboratory facilities set in the heart of our historic campus, you\u2019ll explore this vibrant field.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The course will take you through a series of health laboratory challenges led by both academic and NHS staff, training you in the <strong>diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and prevention of disease<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>With a focus on practical exploration and assessment, these exercises will build your capability and confidence to undertake your own laboratory research and work-based modules will give you the opportunity to <strong>develop your skills and employability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>You\u2019ll finish the course well-prepared to <strong>graduate to a career in biomedical research or healthcare services<\/strong>, or to progress to professional training in medicine, dentistry, nursing or teaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>For students wishing to become <strong>Registered Biomedical Scientists<\/strong>, a placement year in UKAS accredited NHS hospital laboratories will enable you to <strong>complete your IBMS Registration Training Portfolio<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/article><article tabindex=\"-1\">\n<p>Your first year on the course will introduce the essentials of <strong>anatomy, physiology, cells, infection, immunity, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics<\/strong>. While developing a grounding in these key topics, you\u2019ll be well supported in your transition to studying Biomedical Science at university and be given personal access to the Fundamentals of Biomedical Science book series.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>You\u2019ll rotate through key themes in <strong>histopathology, clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, haematology and virology<\/strong> in your second year, debating contemporary issues and gaining key skills in data analysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>By the third year you\u2019ll develop specialisms in <strong>biotechnology, neurobiology, pharmacology, toxicology, epidemiology and cancer medicine<\/strong>, choosing your own laboratory-based research area for your Dissertation project. You\u2019ll accomplish all this through our focus on practical learning, drawing on and developing a broad spectrum of skills to help you <strong>succeed in life beyond University<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>To support your undergraduate journey, we also offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/finance\/funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fee waivers, bursaries and awards<\/a>, for both UK and International students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/article><article tabindex=\"-1\">\n<p>Introducing, preparing and helping you to secure progression to graduate employment or a higher degree is a key part of our course. <\/p>\n\n<p>In addition to the modules that form our academic themes and skill pathways, we have work-based learning modules in Years 2 and 3 in the form of short, 10 day internships and longer, 9-12 month placements. These modules not only contribute to your overall degree grade, but enable you to sample flavours of different careers, gain experience for future applications and can often lead to a foot in the door with the company that you place with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>We also offer a valuable year-long NHS placement at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where students gain hands-on experience as biomedical scientists.
