SUMMARY:God and the Pandemic | The Michael Perham Cathedral and University Lecture 2021
DESCRIPTION:God and the Pandemic\, presented by Revd Professor David Wilkinson.\n\n\n\nThe Michael Perham Cathedral and University of Gloucestershire Lecture 2021\n\n\n\nHow does a scientist and a theologian engage with some of the big questions raised by the pandemic? What have we been learning about what it means to be ‘led by the science’ and the vulnerability of humans to the natural world? Where is God in all of this? \n\n\n\nThe pandemic has focused questions in the relationship of science and theology which are both helpful and challenging. \n\n\n\nIn this year’s annual Michael Perham University and Cathedral Lecture\, taking place on Monday 17 May\, Revd Professor David Wilkinson will consider these questions from a place of reflection. With PhDs in both astrophysics and systematic theology\, Revd Professor Wilkinson comes at this complicated and thought-provoking topic as both a scientist and theologian\, offering stimulating commentary as well as steers for personal contemplation. \n\n\n\nRevd Professor David Wilkinson is Principal of St John’s College and Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion in Durham University. A regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 Thought for the Day\, his recent books include When I pray what does God do? and (with Dave Hutchings) God\, Stephen Hawking and the Multiverse. \n\n\n\nThe Michael Perham University and Cathedral Lecture series is named in commemoration of Michael Perham. As well as being Bishop of Gloucester\, Michael was Pro-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire for many years\, served as Chair of the University Council\, and was instrumental in developing closer relationships between the University and the Diocese. The event usually alternates between the Cathedral and the University Chapel each year\, however this year it will be delivered by Zoom\, given current Covid-19 restrictions. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will be introduced by the Rt Rev Rachel Treweek\, Bishop of Gloucester\, and followed by a short Q&A session. \n\n\n\nThis lecture will be delivered online. An email link will be sent to confirmed attendees the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Universities and the Media - Friend or Foe? | Online Panel and Debate
DESCRIPTION:Universities and the Media – Friend or Foe? | Online Panel and Debate\n\n\n\nAn event with the University of Gloucestershire and HEPI\n\n\n\nMany university activities are widely celebrated\, such as developing a vaccine for COVID-19 or educating nurses\, doctors and engineers. Despite this\, universities largely receive a negative coverage in the UK media. This includes regular coverage of: “mickey mouse degrees”\, high executive salaries\, snow flake students\, lack of free speech\, student debt\, a poor record on access and participation\, and an apparent crisis in student mental health. \n\n\n\nUniversities lack adequate coordination at the sector level and have failed to respond to these issues collaboratively and effectively\, making any response appear defensive\, self-interested\, and awkward. \n\n\n\nUniversities therefore need to respond to criticism and explore ways of presenting themselves in a collaborative and positive way\, in the media and with government. This would enable them to capture the esteem with which some University activities are held and gain more friends in the media\, government\, and society more generally. \n\n\n\nThis online event\, in association with HEPI (The Higher Education Policy Institute) and the University of Gloucestershire School of Media is designed to ignite lively debate and discussion on this issue.\n\n\n\nThe forum will provide a positive way forward for universities and the media to work together to provide incredible stories\, respond to criticism and create a framework for future working. \n\n\n\nThe Panel\n\n\n\nChaired by Rachel Hewitt\, Director of Policy and Advocacy\, HEPI | @rachel_hewitt\, @hepi_news \n\n\n\nRt Hon Chris Skidmore\, MP for Kingswood\, former Universities and Science Minister | @CSkidmoreUK \n\n\n\nKirsty Walker\, Director of Media Relations\, UCL – University College London | @kirstywalker1 \n\n\n\nJohn Gill\, Editor\, Times Higher Education | @JG_THE \n\n\n\nThe event and our panellists will be introduced by Ulani Seaman\, University of Gloucestershire Journalism Student | @ulanimae \n\n\n\nThe event will be opened by Dr Matthew Andrews\, Registrar at University of Gloucestershire | @HE_MPA \n\n\n\nThis Forum is Ideal For\n\n\n\nUK University Media and Communications professionalEducation policy makers\, influencers and researchersSenior leaders in Higher EducationMedia organisations\, journalists and education correspondents worldwideUK HE consultants and service providersMedia students\, researchers and educators\n\n\n\nBooking is free (via Eventbrite) and everyone is welcome. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n9.00 – 9.10 \n\n\n\nWelcome to the event and brief opening remarks\, Matthew Andrews (Secretary and Registrar at the University of Gloucestershire). \n\n\n\n9.10 – 9.45 \n\n\n\nPanellists outline their positions – introduced by Ulani Seaman (Journalism student in the School of Media at the University of Gloucestershire). \n\n\n\n9.45 – 10.25 \n\n\n\nQuestions and discussion\, chaired by Rachel Hewitt (HEPI) – online delegates will be able to post questions and contribute to the discussion via the chat. \n\n\n\n10.25 – 10.30 \n\n\n\nThanks and conclusion\, Rachel Hewitt (HEPI).
