{"id":11528,"date":"2022-09-20T13:32:32","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T13:32:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=11528"},"modified":"2026-04-22T09:03:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T09:03:16","slug":"sfw-undergraduate-funding","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/knowledge-base\/sfw-undergraduate-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Finance Wales (SFW) &#8211; Undergraduate funding for 2026\/27"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Funding for full-time undergraduate courses starting in 2026\/27<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following information is based on the proposed finance package for 2025\/26 for full-time students who will start an undergraduate course (including courses with an integral foundation year*) in September 2026 or January 2027 and who ordinarily (lawfully) live in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-is-7-font-size is-7\">*The UK government has set a tuition fee cap for some integral foundation courses, the tuition fees for years of study after the integral foundation year will be charged at a higher level of \u00a39,790.&nbsp;Contact us for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student Loans and a non-repayable grant is available for each academic year to help towards living costs and to cover the cost of the tuition fees. The Maintenance Loan and the Welsh Maintenance Grant is split into 3 equal instalments and is paid directly into the student\u2019s bank account \u2013 1 instalment at the beginning of each term in each academic year. If the course starts in September 2026, you must meet the eligibility before 1 September 2026; or before 1 January 2027 if the course starts in January 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Aged 25 or over<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To have been married or in a civil partnership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To have the care of a child under the age of 18<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To have been out of full-time education and self-supporting for a minimum period of 3 years \u2013 if under 25 years of age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Both parents are deceased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To have been in care for any three-month period since your 16<sup>th<\/sup> birthday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To be irreconcilably estranged (and have no contact) from your parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If Student Finance consider you to be an independent student, your parents\u2019 income will not be considered. Instead, the means-test for the Maintenance Loan will be based on your details and the income of your partner, if relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Long Courses Loan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your academic year is longer than the standard 30 weeks and 3 days, and you are entitled to the means-tested element of the Maintenance Loan, you will be considered for the Long Courses Loan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means you may be entitled to an additional \u00a398 per additional week of the course if you are living in the parental home, and \u00a3147 per additional week if you are living away from the parental home, or aged 25 and over, or assessed as Independent by Student Finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Grants for Dependants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you can apply for the Grants for Dependants, which are non-repayable, you must submit the main student loan application to Student Finance Wales, even if you don\u2019t want to apply for student loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will use the information in this application to check your identity, residency and household income. Student Finance may also send you a separate application form to apply for the grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Adult Dependants\u2019 Grant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a partner or other adult who is financially dependent on you, you may be entitled to a grant that is up to a maximum of \u00a33,474.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the dependant adult is not a partner but their income is less than \u00a33,923 in the academic year, you may also qualify for this grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant will be paid directly into your bank account in 3 equal instalments during the academic year \u2013 one instalment per term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can only apply for this grant once in each academic year, even if you have more than one adult who financially depends on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant will be considered for benefits purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Childcare Grant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of Childcare Grant payable will be based on your household income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will cover 85% of actual childcare costs, subject to a maximum grant of <strong>\u00a3196<\/strong>* per week for one child only or \u00a3335* per week for two or more children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will not be eligible for this grant if you are expecting to receive the Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit or Universal Credit; or Tax-free Childcare from HMRC; or the Parental Support grant from the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant is not considered for benefits purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-is-7-font-size is-7\">*Please note: Where a childcare provider has not been identified, the amount of childcare grant payable in academic year 2026 to 2027 will be based on 85% of actual childcare costs, subject to a maximum grant of \u00a3150 per week. This lower rate payment will be made until details of the childcare provider have been submitted and may only be paid for one academic quarter (usually a term).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Parents\u2019 Learning Allowance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum amount payable will be <strong>\u00a31,983 <\/strong>and the minimum <strong>\u00a354<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant will be paid directly into your bank account in 3 equal instalments during the academic year \u2013 one instalment per term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant is not considered for benefits purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Dependants&#8217; Income Disregards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An amount of income is disregarded when calculating entitlement to Grants for Dependants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 \u00a36,561 is disregarded where the eligible student has no dependent children and just applying for the Adult Dependants\u2019 Grant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 \u00a39,026 is disregarded where the eligible student is not a lone parent and has one dependent child \u2022 \u00a310,261 is disregarded where the eligible student is not a lone parent and has more than one dependent child; or is a lone parent and has one dependent child<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 \u00a311,502 is disregarded where the eligible student is a lone parent and has more than one dependent child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Disabled Students\u2019 Allowances (DSA)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply for the DSA if you have a disability that affects your ability to study. DSA is non-repayable and non-means tested. Support comes in the form of practical help, not additional funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You are not eligible if you are:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">a student who is only eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">eligible for an NHS Disabled Students\u2019 Allowance (this is a separate scheme)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">getting equivalent support from another funding source, either from your University or a Social Work Bursary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Evidence requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th>Condition<\/th><th>Proof<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Disabilities or long-term health condition <\/td><td>Report or letter from your doctor or consultant &#8211; you can also fill in the <a href=\"http:\/\/media.slc.co.uk\/sfe\/nysf\/sfe_dsa_disability_evidence_form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disability evidence form <\/a> <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Mental-health condition <\/td><td>Report or letter from your doctor or consultant &#8211; you can also fill in the <a href=\"http:\/\/media.slc.co.uk\/sfe\/nysf\/sfe_dsa_disability_evidence_form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disability evidence form <\/a> <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Specific learning difficulty like dyslexia <\/td><td>A \u2018diagnostic assessment\u2019 from a psychologist or suitably qualified specialist teacher \u2013 you will need to be reassessed if you had this done when you were under 16  <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For all students in 2026\/27 the DSA allowance is simplified into one allowance. An exception will be the Travel Allowance that will in effect be uncapped. The Travel Allowance helps with any extra travel costs students may have to pay to get to university because of their disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th>Allowance<\/th><th>Maximum amount<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Single DSA <\/td><td>\u00a334,671<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Travel allowance <\/td><td>As required <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Application process:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Apply for Student Finance online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Then apply for DSA online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Student Finance will contact you regarding the assessment of needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A local Disability Assessor will assess you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Assessment of a Needs Report will be produced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Report is sent to Student Finance for approval<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important information: please note that Student Finance has changed the process required for needs assessments. For more information, please email <a href=\"mailto:counselling@glos.ac.uk\">counselling@glos.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">How and when to apply for funding from Student Finance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentfinancewales.co.uk\/news\/get-ready-to-apply-for-full-time-undergraduate-student-finance-for-2025-to-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>apply for student finance<\/strong><\/a> every year from late March <strong>(no need to wait for confirmation of a place on a course<\/strong>).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are starting a course in January, please do not apply for Student Finance until August\/September as the course details may not be available on the Student Finance course database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some circumstances Student Finance prefer paper application forms.&nbsp;We can email forms to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Repayment of Student Loans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Loans are repayable in the April following graduation if you are earning a gross salary above the current threshold of \u00a328,470 per year.&nbsp;Your monthly loan repayment will be calculated on 9% of earnings above the gross income threshold of \u00a328,470 which is \u00a32,372 per month, or \u00a3547 per week in the UK. This is known as Plan 2. View more information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/repaying-your-student-loan\/what-you-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plan 2 and how the interest in applied<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are employed, a deduction will automatically be taken from your monthly salary, via your National Insurance Contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are self-employed, repayment will be arranged when you complete your self-assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that interest begins to accrue as soon as you receive the first instalment of the Maintenance Loan, or when the first instalment of the Tuition Fee Loan is paid to the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest will continue to accrue until the loan is repaid in full or has been written off. The interest rate for students starting an undergraduate course in 2026\/27 and whilst studying is currently 6.2% (February 2026). The interest is calculated daily and then applied to your balance of loan each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Financial Assistance Fund (FAF)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once enrolled, you can apply to the university\u2019s Financial Assistance Fund for possible help towards paying for such things as field trips or accommodation etc. Money can\u2019t be guaranteed from this source, but it is worth applying as awards do not have to be repaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enrolled students can apply online via their Student Record on the MyGlos app from the start of the course. Please note that if you are entitled to a Maintenance Loan\/Grant you must have applied for the maximum entitlement that is available to you prior to applying to this fund. Once enrolled you will be able to access a Council Tax Exemption Certificate from Student Records Online.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to send this to the relevant Council. If you live with one adult who is not a full-time student they will qualify for the 25% Single Occupancy Discount.&nbsp; No exemption will apply if you live with more than one adult who is not a full-time student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Overdraft<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you open a Student Bank Account you may be eligible for an interest free overdraft. Please check comparison websites for the best deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most students will not be able to access benefits from the Department of Work &amp; Pensions (DWP). However, there are exceptions. For more information please contact us and\/or the Citizen\u2019s Advice Bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that Maintenance Loans will be considered when calculating benefits regardless of whether you take the loan or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Employment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/student-futures\/\">Careers and Employability<\/a> Team at the university runs a recruitment service called Unitemps. Be careful of emails or texts asking for sensitive information to be provided urgently \u2013 these are phishing emails and smishing texts.&nbsp; Always check them out before replying and note that official organisations, such as the University, Student Finance, Student Loans Company, Banks and HMRC, never ask for personal information (e.g. bank account details) to be provided by email, text or phone.
