Transport strike action<\/a><\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

Industrial action affecting Health and Social Care placements <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As you will be aware, there have been several announcements regarding industrial action, with confirmation of ongoing strike action across a number of unions associated with health and social care.\u00a0 This has an impact on courses of study with placements in the associated fields.\u00a0Please refer to your profession related union \/ college or professional statutory regulatory body website for more information.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please ensure you are aware of forthcoming strike action in your placement organisation and discuss alternative arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a University we work closely with Practice Partners to assess the risk to student placement learning during strike action.  The advice is that, if your placement organisation is included in any industrial action, we would ask that you don\u2019t attend placement.  This is to protect your supernumerary status and learning experience.  It is important you discuss with your practice assessor \/ educator plans for when strike dates are announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practice placement areas will support you to adjust your rota to avoid strike days, please note if you attend on a strike day you may be asked to go home or to study in any available library and your practice hours will be rearranged to a non-strike day.  If this is not possible to re-schedule hours – your placement education team \/ practice educator \/ assessor may ask you to complete reflective or case-based learning at home on the strike day to support your ongoing development and build evidence for proficiency \/ competence in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please ensure you are aware of forthcoming strike action in your placement organisation and discuss arrangements to reorganise shifts \/ undertake self-directed or remote placement learning activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apprenticeship students should follow guidance from employers, but it is not anticipated you will work as a student on strike days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nursing strike action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) announced that industrial action will continue.  A set of frequently asked questions are available on the RCN website<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NMC have issued a position statement<\/strong><\/a> which includes guidance in relation to nursing students; as a University, we work closely with Practice Partners to assess the risk to student learning during strike action. As the level of staffing during strike action will potentially be affected a collaborative decision has been made that students all Nursing students should not attend<\/strong> shifts during industrial action; practice placements will support you to adjust your rota to avoid strike days, please note if you attend on a strike day you may be asked to go <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please ensure you read the advice below and the Royal College of Nursing FAQs<\/strong><\/a> regarding industrial action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a student nurse. Can I strike?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

RCN student members and apprentices who are directly employed by an NHS employer on Agenda for Change terms and conditions can take strike action. This may include bank contracts. However, please check your bank contract to ensure it is an NHS employer on Agenda for Change terms and conditions and not an internal pay or bank system that differs from the NHS terms and conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If<\/strong> you are not an apprentice or on a bank contract you cannot strike.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I cover shifts as an agency worker during strike action?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The RCN expects agency workers will not provide cover for striking members. If you are allocated to work at an NHS organisation on a day of strike action, the RCN expectation is for members not to cover that shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could ask your agency to find you alternative work at an organisation that is not affected by the strike action, for example, a private hospital or a care home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I wear my University uniform on the picket line?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

No. The University is not covered under the agenda for change terms and conditions. Wearing your uniform on a picket line may breach the University code of conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paramedic strike action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

UNISON, Unite and the GMB have confirmed that members will take part in strike action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport strike action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As you may be aware, there are planned public transport strikes across the country next week, coinciding with many student placements across the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please ensure you are aware of forthcoming strike action and plan alternative arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In preparation for the strikes and to reduce the risk of placement absence please ensure you follow the below guidance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Check your eligibility for Learning Support Funding (LSF). If you are unsure whether you have access to this funding, please contact the Money Advice Service<\/a> or contact HSCplacement@glos.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/li>
  2. If you are eligible for LSF, please keep all receipts and tickets as evidence of travel.<\/li>
  3. Check your local services are still running.<\/li>
  4. Email HSCplacements@glos.ac.uk<\/a> if you find that your planned bus\/train travel is not possible before making other arrangements which need to be funded.<\/li>
  5. Contact your placement area and practice educator to ensure all alternative routes and options are considered.<\/li>
  6. Please report all absences from placement, alerting all relevant staff as per the University protocol<\/a>. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
