{"id":13587,"date":"2023-06-27T08:32:11","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T08:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=13587"},"modified":"2023-06-27T13:43:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T13:43:20","slug":"waste-management-policy-2023-2028","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/knowledge-base\/waste-management-policy-2023-2028\/","title":{"rendered":"Waste Management Policy 2023-2028"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/knowledge-base\/estates-strategy-2022-2027\/\">Estates Strategy 2022-2027<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/knowledge-base\/sustainability-strategy-2022-2027\/\">Sustainability Strategy 2022-2027<\/a> recognise the significant environmental impacts to be mitigated through effective waste management. This includes understanding and addressing the un-necessary use of resources as well as the financial costs of management and disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University recognises the significance of the hierarchy of related to waste production, namely \u2018reduce, reuse and recycle\u2019. It prioritises wherever possible the intention to avoid un-necessary purchases as critical in waste avoidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst some operational elements are the specific responsibility of University staff, the actions of all staff and students are required to deliver the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Policy Commitments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This policy is aligned to the ISO14001: 2015 Environmental Management System and performance monitoring is part of the annual Sustainability Performance Review. This assures that the University maintains its high-level commitments to comply with national waste management and recycling legislation and continually improve its culture of waste minimisation\/avoidance and circular economy good practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/knowledge-base\/carbon-net-zero-strategy-2021-2030\/\">Carbon Net Zero Strategy 2021-2030<\/a> has an aligned emissions reduction target related to waste policies and delivery of this includes effective liaison through its waste management contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Policy Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">To reduce overall solid waste production throughout the University.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To ensure no waste is sent to landfill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To maximise reuse, recycling and recovery of waste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To maintain good practice in waste management in student residences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To develop awareness of waste minimisation amongst staff and students.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">SMART Targets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Performance against the targets for waste management volumes and recycling percentages are published in the Annual Sustainability Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These targets, baselines and related actions are identified below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th>O<strong>bjective &amp; 2027 Target<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Baseline&nbsp;(2018\/19)<\/strong><\/th><th><strong><strong>2027 Target<\/strong><\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Reduce waste arising<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/td><td>41.1kg\/FTE&nbsp; (Total waste = 323T)<\/td><td><strong>31.7kg\/FTE <\/strong>(23% reduction) &nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Increase recycling rate<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>55% of waste recycled (Total recycled = 176T) &nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>60%<\/strong> waste recycled&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Actions to deliver against these two SMART targets recognise the inter-dependence of waste arising and recycling rates. The priority actions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Review and update waste streams to identify opportunities for improvement and simplification (e.g. food waste).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Develop and deliver communications to the user community of staff and students on waste avoidance, contamination, re-use and recycling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Maintain opportunities for students to engage in good practice related to halls of residence (e.g. British Heart Foundation Pack for Good initiative).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction The University\u2019s Estates Strategy 2022-2027 and Sustainability Strategy 2022-2027 recognise the significant environmental impacts to be mitigated through effective waste management.
