{"id":6141,"date":"2021-03-09T11:25:58","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T11:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=6141"},"modified":"2024-05-15T09:46:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T09:46:07","slug":"an-engineering-legacy","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/information\/knowledge-base\/an-engineering-legacy\/","title":{"rendered":"An Engineering Legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">The county has a world-class history in engineering.&nbsp;London\u2019s first underground tube line was designed by Cheltenham-based engineer Benjamin Baker and The Gloucester Docks were the site of industrial revolution and trade in the 1800s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The first ever&nbsp;British and Allied jet, the Gloster E28, was designed and built by the Gloster Aircraft Company.&nbsp;Powered by jet engine inventor Frank Whittle\u2019s first flight engine,&nbsp;its taxiing trails first began at Gloucester&#8217;s&nbsp;Brockworth&nbsp;airfield. Although the original jet takes pride of place in the Science Museum in London, an exact replica can be found at the Jet Age Museum in Gloucester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill has-grey-light-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/cmsr-web-assets.glos.ac.uk\/sites\/129\/2021\/03\/09111608\/Engineering-Legacy-1-1024x1024.jpg);background-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cmsr-web-assets.glos.ac.uk\/sites\/129\/2021\/03\/09111608\/Engineering-Legacy-1-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Student running tests\" class=\"wp-image-129000002510 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">For many years, the Cheltenham Flyer&nbsp;held&nbsp;the unchallenged title&nbsp;of&nbsp;World\u2019s&nbsp;Fastest&nbsp;Train. Engineered&nbsp;in 1935 to&nbsp;speed up the journey between Cheltenham\u2019s original St. James Station and London&nbsp;Paddington, it reached an average top speed of 81.6 mph. Which was unprecedented at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today our engineering students benefit from local long-standing firms such as Dowty Heritage and GE Aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The latter is a world-leading provider of equipment for civilian and military aircraft, contributing to a global service network. GE produces aviation jet and turboprop engines, avionics and electrical power and mechanical systems for aircraft. At present, they\u2019re quickly developing as a digital industrial business because of their ability to harness large streams of data and provide incredible insights as a result.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The county has a world-class history in engineering.
