Dr Adeela ahmed Shafi awarded an MBE

​​​​Dr Adeela has been driving important initiatives as a social activist in Bristol for the last thirteen years, specifically within the Pakistani community. She was elected as General Secretary for the Pakistan Association Bristol (PAB) in 2007 and then Governor for the oversight of PAB. Following this, Adeela was the first female Parliamentary Candidate of Pakistani descent to stand in the 2010 General Elections.

She is the current Chairperson for the Avon and Somerset Police Constabulary’s Police Scrutiny Panel, engaging with the Police Crime Commissioner, Councillors and Representative groups, and working to ensure that the Police are held to account. Dr Adeela often approaches groups to speak about the police service, recruitment and events. 

Alongside this work, Dr Adeela has an impressive publishing profile. Her subject of research is disengaged learners who may have other background characteristics which affect their full participation in learning and achieving their potential. Her ongoing activities include EU funded projects on ‘Re-Engaging Young Offenders with Education & Learning’, involving partners in Spain, Italy and Germany, and a project seeking to develop the emotional and social competencies of young offenders through the use of games and sport. In addition, Dr Adeela is engaged in research on academic resilience and is currently leading on a book entitled ‘Reconceptualising Resilience in Education’. 

Dr Adeela ahmed Shafi said:

All the work I have done has involved working with so many fantastic people, many of whom may not feel they have a voice or who feel marginalised. I am grateful that they give me the chance to work with them and so this MBE is for them too.” ​​
