Professor Raphael is internationally recognised for her expertise in the fields of religion, feminism and gender (Jewish, Christian and post-Christian) western art and religion; the sacred/profane distinction in Western religion and feminist thealogy


Professor Raphael is internationally recognised for her expertise in the fields of religion, feminism and gender and is the author of numerous articles and books including Gender, Idolatry and Alienation; Judaism and the Visual Image: A Jewish Theology of Art; The Female Face of God in Auschwitz: A Jewish Feminist Theology of the Holocaust; Introducing Thealogy: Discourse on the Goddess; Rudolf Otto and the Concept of Holiness; Thealogy and Embodiment:The Post-Patriarchal Reconstruction of Female Sacrality

Professor Raphael is an Honorary Research Scholar at the University of Wales, Lampeter and sits on the International Board of The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion and The Journal of Religion and Gender. She is Visiting Professor in Theology at the Universities of Chichester and York St John.

Professional positions

As well as teaching at the University of Gloucestershire, I teach Jewish Religious Thought at Leo Baeck College, London and am a Senior Editor (Associate) at Oxford University Press, New York, for The Oxford Encyclopedia of Religion and the Arts 1500-The Present.
