Dr Pekka Pitkänen's main research interests are Pentateuchal studies, Israelite history and historiography, ancient Near Eastern studies (including language), biblical criticism and sociological and anthropological approaches to biblical studies.


Dr Pekka Pitkänen originally studied computer science (minor in economics) via an applied physics programme. He then completed an MDiv in Christian theology and a PhD in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible studies. His publications include: Central Sanctuary and Centralisation of Worship in Ancient Israel (Gorgias Press 2003), Joshua (IVP, 2010) and Numbers: Narrative, Ritual and Colonialism (Routledge, 2017). His current book project is on Migration and Colonialism in the Ancient Near East (under contract, Routledge).

Dr Pekka Pitkänen's teaching focuses on the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, Christianity and various areas of Christian Theology, also as they relate to such issues as postmodernity, social sciences and philosophy of science; biblical Hebrew.
