Dr Matthew Lovett

Associate Head of School - Outreach & Engagement

I am Associate Head (Outreach and Engagement) of the School of Creatives and Associate Professor in Music Innovation. My role encompasses industry, civic and education partnerships, student recruitment and research.

Biography

As a creative musician and researcher, I’m interested in exploring the evolving nature of music and sound practices. I am a BAFTA award winner, and my work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. My writing examines musical creativity in the context of new materialism, speculative realism and deep ecology, along with music commerce in relation to emergent rights and financial technologies, artificial intelligence and governance systems.

My latest monograph, ‘Ecologies of Creative Music Practice: Mattering Music’ will be published in 2023.

PhD supervision

I supervise PhD candidates who are interested in music economies, emergent music rights and governance structures, music and sound aesthetics, composition, performance, improvisation and ecomusicology. Drop me an email if you’re interested in postgraduate research in any of these areas.

  • PhD: Outside on the Inside: Improvisation according to contemporary materialist thought., Goldsmiths, 2017
