Jonathan is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Journalism at the University of Gloucestershire. He joined from Cardiff University in 2017 where he was a lecturer and researcher. He Holds a PhD in Journalism Studies from Cardiff University.
Biography
During his time at the University he has published on a range of topics relating to journalism studies including the book Protest Campaigns, Media and Political Opportunities, and a journal article on the use of clickbait by sport media outlets on the social media platform Twitter. Due to his expertise he’s regularly used as a source for The Athletic.
His other roles at the University include Postgraduate Research Lead, and Research Ethics Lead for the School of Media, and he is the Unit of Assessment Coordinator for Unit 34 at the University (Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management) in the run up to the Research Excellent Framework 2027.

Jonathan teaches across a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules including: Journalism in Context; Sport, Celebrity, and Society; History, Ethics and Sport; Sports Media Relations; Ethics, Censorship and Regulation; Sports and Celebrity Communications; Dissertation / Final Year Dissertation; and Major Project: Media Communications & PR.
Research
Alongside his teaching his current research work includes studying football fan protests, the use of football related clickbait on social media by major media organisations, the implications of gambling sponsorship on football culture, and constructions of nationalism among ‘proper football men’. The fundamental premise at the heart of his research is to use sport as a way of explaining the major issues impacting upon society. Jonathan sits on the editorial board of the Football Collective whose aim is to bring critical debate to football. His book Protest Campaigns, Media and Political Opportunities was published by Rowman & Littlefield International 2016.
