Samuel Copland

Senior Lecturer in Marketing

I love storytelling, through any medium, and I believe that great storytelling is at the heart of any brilliant marketing department. My specialist interests include campaign planning, brand development, social media marketing, digital marketing, and of course, storytelling in marketing.

Biography

Before becoming an academic, I gained 20 years of industry experience in both public and private-sector marketing. I ran a creative agency for over 10 years before going on to help Superdry become the global fashion brand they are today.

I have a wide range of marketing, advertising and comms experience including:

  • Omni-channel campaign development and management.
  • Brand development and execution.
  • Social media campaigns, experiential marketing, and consumer UX.
  • CRM development and evaluation.

Conducting research and analysis of business trends, consumer behaviour and emerging technologies has been a major part of my work.

I have employed and managed teams in the commercial and public sectors, and so understand the issues around balancing the needs of employers and helping students develop creative, enquiring minds meeting academic rigour.

In my various roles, I have negotiated complex agreements between agencies, businesses and across departments.

Teaching & Research

Teaching

I like to combine industry experience and academic theory together in classes, so that students can not only gain a deeper understanding of the topic, but also reflect upon how they experience marketing as both consumer and producer.

I enjoy challenging students to think about the broader sociological and philosophical facets to marketing, including ethics and sustainability.

My teaching areas are Marketing and Communication, Digital Promotion, Campaign Planning, Digital Marketing Fundamentals, Digital Marketing Strategy, Experiential Marketing, Social Media Channels, Creative Skills for Marketers, Marketing Principles, Loyalty and Communications.

Research

My current topics of research are:

  • – Understanding the use of digital-memes to develop co-created brand focused narrative transmission and transportation through storytelling (PhD).
  • – Organisational approaches to technology adoption.
  • – The role of AI in creative marketing.
  • – Utopian structures in the digital realm and their effect on human behaviours.
  • – How organisations can integrate and leverage CRM systems to maximum effect.
  • – The role of a Sprint approach to project management in a learning environment.
