{"id":5767,"date":"2021-11-11T05:10:22","date_gmt":"2021-11-11T05:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/staff\/staff\/richard-billingham-2\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T15:31:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:31:29","slug":"richard-billingham","status":"publish","type":"staff","link":"https:\/\/www.glos.ac.uk\/staff\/profile\/richard-billingham\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Billingham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Richard has been with University of Gloucestershire since 2006 and is a critically acclaimed artist, photographer and filmmaker.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was the first in his family to attend university, graduating from Sunderland University, 1994 with a B.A in painting. During this time, he turned to photography and whilst still a student was invited by curator Val Williams to exhibit a photographic triptych of his father in <em>Who\u2019s looking at the Family<\/em>, at the Barbican Art Gallery London &#8211; a landmark exhibition and the first in the UK to survey work made by photographers whose inspiration was their own family.<\/p>\n<p>He received gallery representation by Anthony Reynolds, London and was the first recipient of the City Bank Prize for Photography (now the\u00a0<strong>Deutsche B\u00f6rse Photography Foundation Prize) in 1997. In the same year he <\/strong>exhibited in Sensation at the Royal Academy, London and <strong>was nominated for the Turner Prize 2001. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Billingham\u2019s first feature film <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ray_%26_Liz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ray &amp; Liz<\/em><\/a> was based on his lived experience of growing up in a high rise flat in the West Midlands. It received 18 awards and a further 25 nominations, including a BAFTA for Best Debut Feature Film 2019. It holds 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/ray-liz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">81% on Metacritic<\/a>  indicating \u2018Universal Acclaim.\u2019 He currently has two further features in development.<\/p>\n<p>A new, revised publication of Billingham\u2019s early photographic work <em>Ray\u2019s a Laugh<\/em> was published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mackbooks.co.uk\/collections\/coming-soon\/products\/rays-a-laugh-br-richard-billingham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mack Books<\/a> in 2024. Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Teaching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard became Professor of Fine Art at University Gloucestershire in 2012 and is a PhD supervisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is committed to students reaching full creative potential and brings direct experience from working closely with gallery curators, publishers and producers. He encourages \u2018thinking through making\u2019 in film, photography, exhibition and publication and often works with PhD students on location, connecting thinking and ideas with practice and theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is currently interested in receiving PhD proposals connected with themes of climate change, marginalized communities and human connection to nature and place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, besides having a permanent post at University of Gloucestershire, Richard has also been invited to teach for short periods in a variety of institutions across BA, MA and PhD programmes including The Royal College of Art; LUCA School of Arts Brussels; Goldsmiths University of London; Griffin University Brisbane; University of North Texas; Fatamorgana School of Art Photography Copenhagen, Ruskin College University of Oxford and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"heading wp-block-heading\">Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard\u2019s practice has a reputation for impactful realism, direct storytelling and crosses film directing, screenwriting, photography, video, gallery exhibition and book publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It focuses on marginalized communities, landscape, place and more recently, climate change. Work evolves gradually from collected \u2018evidence bases\u2019 comprising empirical observation of everyday life, interviews and lived experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Past bodies of work include <em>Ray\u2019s a Laugh <\/em>1996, the TV \/ gallery film <em>Fish Tank<\/em> 1998, <em>Black Country<\/em> 2003, <em>Zoo<\/em> 2006, the feature film <em>Ray &amp; Liz<\/em> 2019 and extensive work made in the British landscape. Together, his photography and video installations have had more over 40 solo exhibitions and been included in more than 200 group shows internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard is currently developing two further features. One is an adaptation of the \u2018nature\u2019 novel <em>At Hawthorn Time<\/em> by Melissa Harrison in development with the British Film Institute. These have included <em>The Ethics of Photography<\/em> Yale 2007 Newhaven (Keynote); <em>Responding to a Landscape<\/em> MAC Birmingham 2017 (Keynote); <em>Exposure 3: Human drama and<\/em> documentary ICA London 2015 and <em>Artists Films<\/em> CPH Doc Copenhagen, Denmark 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019 he was invited as a member of the International Competition Jury at&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/fidmarseille.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FIDMarseille Film Festival<\/a>,<\/em> France.
