Academic Subject Leader for Design


Don is a multi-disciplinary creative focused on design in film, music and television – from his early career working for record companies and advertising agencies in film promotion (Universal Pictures, Paramount, 20th Century Fox etc.) to studying consumer behaviour and the subtexts of information exchange. He is currently exploring the themes of transmedia storytelling to produce non-linear experiences.


Don is a designer, educator and creative strategist with interests in film, marketing, advertising and popular culture. He is the Academic Subject Leader for Design and Post Graduate Lead for the School of Arts. His practice and research sit at the borders of art, design, media and business.

Teaching and research


Don is Academic Subject Leader for Design. He teaches the practice and theory of graphic design, advertising, marketing and marketing communications.



Undergraduate, Postgraduate


His PhD and early research outputs used hermeneutics to understand verbal and no verbal communication in creative advertising. His recent work has concentrated on ideas of praxis and the application of Practice as Research (PaR) in design in order to create a framework for future applied design understanding. His current focus is on Americana, film and sound interventions and new forms of design thinking.
