Multi-award winning film produced by University of Gloucestershire lecturer hits UK cinemas

​Feature documentary Unrest, produced by University Lecturer Lindsey Dryden, is released in UK cinemas this week (20 October). The film is an intimate portrayal of director Jennifer Brea’s fight to overcome Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) diagnosis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, a largely misunderstood disease that is thought to affect around 17 million people worldwide.

The story, which has now received global attention following a win at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, is also a love story; how Jen and her new husband Omar forge their relationship while dealing with her mysterious illness is at once heartbreaking, inspiring and funny. After being awarded Special Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival, the film also received the Illuminate Award at the Sheffield Doc/Fest.

Producer Lindsey Dryden is an award-winning director and Lecturer in Film Production at the University and mentors emerging filmmakers. Based in Stroud, she is the founder of ‘Little by Little Films’. Lindsey began her career in documentaries for the likes of the BBC and Channel 4 specialising in intimate and unexpected stories that focus on the body and the arts. Lindsey’s latest art film appeared in the Queer British Art exhibition at Tate Britain and she is now working on her next feature length film, a mystery about a jazz musician and gender outlaw.

“Our Film Production department is extra special because it allows filmmakers deeply connected to industry to continue making our own films while we work with students, which enriches students and lecturers alike. After three years working on Unrest, and working part-time with UoG during some of the most intense phases of the production (I was on a Film Production field trip when I heard we’d been selected for Sundance!), it’s very exciting to be able to bring the film to cinemas across the UK, and especially in the south west.”

Unrest will have its UK theatrical release on October 20 in London, Bristol, Birmingham and cities nationwide, followed by a Q&A tour with director Jennifer Brea.
