University announces honorary awards

The University of Gloucestershire has announced the names of the outstanding individuals
whose contribution to the University, the county and beyond will be recognised at this year’s graduation ceremonies.

Every year, the University confers honorary awards on distinguished individuals who have made an outstanding contribution locally, nationally or internationally or who have supported the University in some way.

They will join around 2,000 graduating students at ceremonies in Cheltenham and Gloucester.

This year Honorary Doctorates and Fellowships will be given to:

• Professor Michael Bracken, Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and Professor of Gynaecology, Reproductive Science and Neurology at Yale University, USA
• Ellie Harrison, Countryfile presenter and President of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust
• Tom Kerridge, Gloucester-born, Michelin-starred chef at the Hand and Flowers pub in Marlow
• The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester
• Jamie McDonald, Gloucester-born world record breaking fundraiser
• David Morrissey, stage and screen actor, producer, screenwriter and director, Honorary Doctor of Arts
• Baroness Jan Royall, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, originally from Newnham on Severn
• Phil Vickery, former England rugby international and Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire

Stephen Marston, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire, said: “The University is delighted to be able to confer honorary degrees and fellowships on such a distinguished group of people. All of them have attained excellence in their own field, with a huge variety of achievements. In their different ways, they have supported the University and enriched the county of Gloucestershire, and we are pleased to be able to honour and celebrate their remarkable contributions.”

The graduation ceremonies will take place at Gloucester Cathedral on Thursday November 19 and Friday November 20, and at The Centaur at Cheltenham Racecourse on Thursday November 26 and Friday November 27.
