Jon Palmer

Lecturer in Sports Journalism

Passionate about sport from top level to grassroots and out covering matches every weekend. Fascinated by the constant changing of the sports media landscape and the impact this has on the way journalists go about their work.

Biography

Jon joins the Media School from Reach Plc, where he was sports editor of Gloucestershire Live for three years.

He has 15 years’ experience in regional sports journalism, building an extensive network of contacts in the south west.

After starting out as a trainee sports reporter at the Gloucester Citizen, Jon became chief football writer at the Gloucestershire Echo and was named sports journalist of the year for Bristol, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Somerset in 2014.

He has written three books on the history of Cheltenham Town, published in 2006, 2009 and 2013, and also spent one season as media and communications manager at the League Two club.

Jon is also a regular contributor to BBC Sport Online, SkySports.com, the Football League Paper, the Press Association and Sportsbeat.

Teaching

Among the modules I deliver are feature writing, sports reporting, sports media relations, and professional portfolio. I also supervise final year feature writing projects and teach on the Communications, PR and the Media MA.
