Julie's research interests are concerned with Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems particularly with respect to agricultural advisory services.


Julie is a specialist concerning knowledge exchange within the agricultural community and knowledge processes within the context of sustainable agriculture and natural resource protection, with particular reference to soil. Her research on knowledge systems has also covered farmer knowledge, attitudes, motivations for uptake of agronomic practices and agri-environmental schemes. Her recent research has looked at social learning and co-innovation processes; boundaries; and socio-technical regime transition towards sustainable agriculture; effective demonstrations; digital agriculture. Julie has led Work Packages in numerous European Horizon 2020 and FP7 projects. She ahs long term experience working internationally, more recently in Indonesia with climate smart farmers and coordinating a Newton Fund Researcher Links Workshops (Egypt and S Africa).

Julie has twice been awarded ‘Paper of Year’ award in 2014 and 2015 from the Journal of Agricultural Extension and Education and received the University of Gloucestershire’s ‘Research and Scholarship’ award in 2017. She was also awarded an OECD Research Fellowship in winter 2018-19 when she collaborated with the University of Queensland, Australia, and CIFOR and the University of Indonesia.
