UoG online course addressing global environmental challenges adopted by United Nations
A free online course at University of Gloucestershire addressing global environmental challenges through the power of storytelling, has been adopted by the United Nations.
Launched by the University’s School of Arts, Culture and Environment, The Search for New Stories to Live By: Econarrative and Ethical Leadership is now part of the UN SDG: Learn programme that showcases impactful learning solutions on sustainable development topics delivered by partners around the world.
Through the collaborative efforts of the UN, multilateral organisations, universities and the private sector, UN SDG: Learn provides a unique gateway that empowers individuals and organisations to make an informed decision when selecting among a wealth of SDG-related courses.
The Search for New Stories to Live By – an eight-part course in eco-narrative and ethical leadership – explores how the stories we tell shape our society, and how new, ecological narratives can lead us toward a more just and sustainable world.
The course has been created by Professor Arran Stibbe, based on his 2024 book Econarrative: ethics, ecology and the search for new stories to live by, working with a team of colleagues at University of Gloucestershire and a wider international team as part of the CLADES project (Critical Language Awareness, Democratic Engagement and Sustainability).
Professor Stibbe (pictured) said: “We’re really pleased that The Search for New Stories to Live By has been adopted by the United Nations as part of its SDG: Learn programme, proving learners with the tools to make a difference to their local communities and wider society.
“On the course, you’ll learn how ethical leadership is not just about position, but about vision: the ability to reimagine society and inspire others through compelling, values-driven storytelling.
“It looks at how leaders use language in inspiring ways to bring more sustainable societies into being, so whether you’re leading a team, a community group or seeking personal growth, this course empowers you to become an ethical leader.
“The course reflects the University’s commitment to sustainability and environmental issues, which is reflected in the latest People and Planet League and our track record in performance and innovation in this area.”
