UoG appoints new professors in recognition of academic excellence
University of Gloucestershire is celebrating the appointment of five new professors, recognising outstanding contributions to teaching, research and professional practice across the institution.
The appointments, confirmed by the University’s Professoriate Appointment Panel, highlight the strength and depth of academic leadership at the University, with individuals drawn from a range of disciplines including psychology, business, philosophy and social sciences.
The appointments include Professor Emily Ryall and Professor Jonathan Hobson, who have been recognised for their exceptional academic achievement and impact through the Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Award.
Professor Ryall is internationally recognised for her work in the philosophy of sport and ethics, with an extensive publication record and global reputation for shaping debate in areas including fairness, technology and inclusion in sport.

Professor Ryall said: “I’m delighted to have been awarded the title of Professor at University of Gloucestershire.
“There aren’t many people who are fortunate enough to be able to follow their passion as a day job, and I feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have had so many opportunities over the years and for that to now be recognised with the title of Professor.
“There’s a lot that I still want to achieve at the University and I look forward to continuing to work with all my amazing colleagues and to support others in the way that I’ve been supported.”
Professor Hobson said: “I am delighted to have been awarded the title of Professor. I look forward to continuing to work with my fantastic colleagues to demonstrate the value that University of Gloucestershire brings to practitioners, academics, policymakers, students and the communities we serve.”
Also appointed to the Professoriate are Associate Professors Graham Parton, Katerina Kantartzis and Rachel Vieira.
Dr Graham Parton, Executive Dean for Teaching Innovation, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be awarded the title of Associate Professor. Starting my career teaching in an early years nursery, I never imagined that my path would lead here. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong passion for education and for helping others to grow and succeed.
“This recognition reflects a shared commitment to teaching excellence, innovation and student success. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop this work, supporting colleagues and contributing to education both within the University and more widely across the sector.”
Dr Kantartzis, who has recently been appointed Interim joint Head of the School of Art, Culture and Environment, said: “I’m delighted to be recognised as an Associate Professor, reflecting my work in psychology and applied health and wellbeing research.
“As I step into my new role, I’m excited to see how this background can help build on the School’s strong creative identity and community connections, and to further embed initiatives such as the Arts, Health and Wellbeing Centre into our research and teaching.”
Dr Vieira, Deputy Head of the School of Business, Computing and Social Sciences, said: “I am proud to be recognised as an Associate Professor, reflecting my commitment to innovative pedagogical practice and impactful research in sustainability and the circular economy.
“As a committed advocate of research-informed teaching and industry-connected learning experiences, I am enthusiastic about contributing meaningfully to the continued diversification of the portfolio.
“I look forward to engaging with colleagues and industry partners to advance teaching, research and innovation-broadening collaborative and interdisciplinary networks.”
Joining the University’s Professoriate represents more than just an honour; this distinguished body plays a key role in driving academic innovation, supporting student success, and strengthening partnerships with business and communities across the region and beyond.
