Supporting our community in a time of conflict and uncertainty

Words cannot fully convey the impact of conflict and violence, wherever in the world it occurs, nor the profound suffering it brings to individuals, families, and communities. Recent attacks in the UK have been a stark reminder that such events can feel close to home, as well as affecting communities globally. Many members of our University community may be feeling shocked, distressed, or unsettled.

Around the world, ongoing conflicts continue to weigh heavily. The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains severe, with widespread displacement, devastation, and loss of civilian life. We recognise the trauma experienced by all those affected and continue to hope for the release of hostages, the delivery of vital aid, and progress toward a just and lasting peace.

Elsewhere, the war in Ukraine continues to have devastating consequences. Violence and repression in Iran, conflict in Sudan, instability in parts of the Middle East, and other crises across the world are deeply distressing. For some in our community, these events also bring personal concern for family and friends.

As a University with a global outlook, we understand that these events affect our staff and students in different ways. We remain proud to support international scholars, including through the Chevening Scholarships scheme, and we are committed to welcoming all members of our community with compassion, dignity, and respect.

At UoG, we are a community built on friendship, freedom, and mutual respect. We remain committed to inclusivity, to freedom of speech within the law, and to rejecting hate in all its forms – including antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and any form of discrimination or harassment.

If you are affected by recent events, support is available. Staff can find resources on Staffnet and can access the Employee Assistance Programme. Students can find wellbeing support through the Health and Wellbeing dashboard on MyGlos. All our community can access our Chaplaincy services.
