2025 University and Cathedral Lecture: Is reconciliation possible in our divided world?

The Dean of Coventry Cathedral, the Very Reverend John Witcombe, will pose the question ‘Is reconciliation possible in our divided world?’ as guest speaker for the 2025 Michael Perham University and Cathedral Lecture.

Over the past 12 years, John (pictured) has led Coventry Cathedral in its role as a thriving spiritual, social and artistic centre in the city, including when Coventry was the UK City of Culture in 2021.

Coventry Cathedral was rebuilt after being extensively damaged during the Second World War. The new cathedral, designed by Basil Spence in a modern style and standing alongside the ruins of the old cathedral, became a symbol of reconciliation and hope.

John has built relationships with churches and communities around the world, visiting many who are engaged in the work of reconciliation, often inducting them into the worldwide network of churches, the Community of the Cross of Nails, inspired by the renewal of Coventry Cathedral.

Amid conflicts around the world, John will be sharing stories of reconciliation as part of the Michael Perham University and Cathedral Lecture series, which is named in commemoration of Michael Perham.

As well as being Bishop of Gloucester, Michael was Pro-Chancellor of University of Gloucestershire for many years, served as Chair of the University Council, and was instrumental in developing closer relationships between the University and the Diocese.

This year’s lecture takes place in Gloucester Cathedral on Tuesday, 13 May (7pm to 8.30pm). All are very welcome to attend this free lecture, but booking is required.
