Help shape the future of Francis Close Hall

Have your say

Our much-loved Grade II* listed campus dates back to 1847, when it was founded by the Rev. Francis Close as Cheltenham Training College.

Today, FCH is home to a vibrant mix of humanities, natural and social sciences, and creative arts programmes, as well as our archive and the Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI).

While the campus remains an inspiring place to study and work, it now requires significant investment. With a maintenance backlog of around £14 million, significant modernisation is needed to meet the standards of a modern university — including essential work to improve accessibility and sustainability.

To explore the best way forward, we have appointed a specialist agent to consider a range of options. These could include leasing, selling, or repurposing all or part of the site.

No decisions have been made, and we want to ensure that the voices of the local community are central to the process.

To help inform next steps, we are hosting a series of drop-in engagement events at Francis Close Hall, where members of the public can meet the project team, ask questions and share ideas.

The dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday 12 November, 5.30pm–7.30pm
  • Tuesday 9 December, 10am-12pm
  • Wednesday 14 January, 1pm-3pm

These sessions are for members of the public – there will also be dedicated sessions for staff and students.

You can also share you views by completing our online form.

A decision about the future of Francis Close Hall is expected in 2026.
