Clearing top tips

Things to consider when applying through Clearing

Whatever reason you choose to go through Clearing, our handy checklist will help you prepare to make those calls and find the right university and course for you.

Whether you didn’t achieve the results you expected or have decided to change your plans, take a deep breath. There are lots of opportunities for you to study, and in three years’ time you could be graduating with a degree.

What if my grades are lower than expected?

You are more than just your grades, and we’ll always look at the complete picture of your application. We may be able to offer you a place even if you don’t meet the entry requirements specified on the course page.

We also offer an integrated foundation year within some of our degrees, this allows you to develop your study and communication skills, whilst gaining an introduction to your chosen subject area. Discover our integrated foundation degrees.

Check UCAS Track

If you’re holding an offer but didn’t achieve your predicted grades, check your UCAS Track account – your firm choice may still have accepted you.

Keep your UCAS ID to hand

We’ll need your UCAS ID to access your details and talk you through the Clearing process. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t applied through UCAS yet, just let us know when you speak to us.

Do your research

View our Clearing courses to find out more about the course you are interested in and whether the course is accepting applications during Clearing. Be realistic with your grades but also ambitious – if you haven’t quite got the grades you need for your chosen course, we may still be able to offer you a place depending on your circumstances. Get in touch and talk to us about your situation to see how we can support you.

Be clear about your grades

When you speak to us we’ll want to hear about your level 3 qualifications such as A and AS-levels, BTEC Diplomas and the Welsh Baccalaureate. We might also ask you about your GCSE results, especially in Mathematics and English Language. Make sure you provide all results on the UCAS tariff – they may be key to being accepted.

Revisit your personal statement

It’s important you show us what a great candidate you are. Reading your personal statement will remind you what you have to offer.

Consider your conversations

Be prepared to speak to an academic about the course you are interested in, especially if the course lists an interview as part of the admission process. Research your chosen course online to help you reflect on why you want to study the course and what appeals to you about UoG.

Don’t feel rushed

Make sure you’re making the right choice for you. If we’re able to offer you a place, you will have some time before you need to officially make your choice through UCAS. Give the offer some thought, revisit course information on our website, arrange a visit to one of our campuses, and get in touch if you have any further questions.

Find a course made for you

“I found UoG through Clearing and it was the first course that really felt like it fitted me. Clearing felt stressful – you don’t know where you’re going to end up, or what’s going to happen – but I’m really glad that it turned out the way it did. If I hadn’t had that phone call with the tutor that day, none of the last three years of my life would have been the same (and they’ve been brilliant) so Clearing was a really positive experience for me in the end.”
