Can the UK Achieve Sustainable Economic Growth?
University of Gloucestershire is hosting a free public lecture on 8 October 2025, where leading economist Professor Malcolm Prowle will explore this important question.
Since the financial crisis of 2008/09, the UK has struggled to generate meaningful growth, with annual increases averaging less than 1%.
Professor Prowle will examine why growth has remained elusive, what role small and medium-sized businesses might play, and whether alternative economic pathways could be more sustainable in the face of climate change and other global challenges.
Professor Prowle is Professor of Performance Management at University of Gloucestershire and is an internationally recognised expert in economics, finance and management.
He has held senior roles in both the public and private sectors, advised UK Government Ministers and Select Committees, and worked with organisations including the World Bank, World Health Organisation and UNDP.
Professor Cathia Jenainati, Head of the University’s School of Business, Computing & Social Sciences, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from one of our leading academics about a topic of the upmost importance to anyone living or working in the UK. This is why we are delighted to welcome members of the business community and the general public to join our staff and students at this exciting event.
“Professor Prowle is an expert in his field, having authored more than 100 publications, including 10 books. He has also delivered talks for the Prime Minster’s Policy Unit and the Economics Research Council. As such, his insights will be fascinating and I hope they prompt great debate amongst those in the room and online”.
Registration for the event will be from 5.30pm, with the lecture starting at 6pm. Light refreshments will be served after.
