F1 presenter Laura Winter inspires next generation of sports journalists at University of Gloucestershire
Formula 1 presenter Laura Winter visited Sports Journalism students at University of Gloucestershire to share insights from her career in motorsport broadcasting and offer advice to those aspiring to break into the industry.
With extensive experience covering F1 races and broadcasting at some of the biggest sporting events in the world, Laura joined a student-led Q&A panel to discuss her journey into motorsport and her approach to live broadcasting, and share insights about what it takes to succeed as a broadcaster in the sport.
Speaking to students, Laura advised: “Be the most prepared version of yourself for anything you’re undertaking so you know you’re going in with the utmost control. Preparation is key for all opportunities. Say yes to things and take the opportunities that come your way – you never know where life will take you.”
A course associate since 2022, Laura visits the University annually, supporting students through Q&A audience events, and providing practical guidance as a guest editor during newsdays, mentoring and classroom teaching.

During her visit, Laura also joined a final-year newsday and appeared on the ‘Park Life’ podcast with Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the University, Dame Clare Marchant, to discuss her experiences in sports media and the approaching climax of the F1 season.
Throughout the day, students gained valuable insights into the world of F1 journalism, including how to prepare for broadcast, handle confidential information, navigate a rapidly evolving media landscape, and what it means to be a woman working in sports journalism.
Brendan McLoughlin, Academic Course Leader for Sports Journalism, said: “We are delighted and honoured to continue benefiting from Laura’s expertise as a sports journalist. She is without doubt one of the very best broadcasters around and a true inspiration to our students.
“Her visit was particularly timely as we celebrate our highest-ever intake of women in the current first-year cohort. The insights she shares are invaluable for students at the very start of their careers, helping them understand what it takes to succeed in the industry.”
Laura is one of several leading industry figures who regularly deliver guest talks that enrich Sports Journalism students’ studies, alongside visitors such as sports broadcaster Jill Douglas MBE and F1 TV presenter Lawrence Barretto.
