UoG student is selected to play for Cayman Islands in World Cup fixtures

University of Gloucestershire student Jahziah Johnson has been selected to represent the Cayman Islands national football team in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences student and his international team-mates will face Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba, Bermuda, and Honduras as part of the qualifiers – an exciting achievement that reflects his commitment and dedication both on and off the pitch.

Jahziah, 20, who plays in midfield, said: “It means a lot to be called up to the national team. I’m just grateful for the opportunity. My degree has definitely helped me, especially with things like fitness, recovery and understanding how to get the best out of myself as an athlete.

“I’m thankful to the University staff for supporting me throughout my time here. Their encouragement has made a big difference.”

As they prepare for their next qualifying match against Bermuda on 4 June, the Cayman Islands sit in third place in Concacaf Group A after two matches.

Daniel Cowen, Academic Course Leader for Sport and Exercise Sciences, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Jahziah has been selected to represent the Cayman Islands in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

“Jahziah’s family have shared how proud they are of him, and the University community joins in celebrating this superb moment.

“For an athlete to be chosen to play for their country is a very special honour and we wish Jahziah and his team-mates every success in their forthcoming fixtures.

“His selection is a strong example of our commitment to supporting students to pursue success in both their academic and sporting careers.”
