The Cyber Security course and its practical sessions, along with projects I have undertaken as well as my placement year, has help me shaped a career in cyber security I want to pursue.
My time here has not always been about enhancing my technical skills but development of me as an individual. I have been both a course rep and the student subject co-ordinator, which allowed me to gain some needed leadership skills, better organisation, and communication skills.
Representing the course and University at external events has allowed for better networking and knowledge of the cyber security industry and how it is an ever-growing area that needs key attention as its impact can be found across different industries.
My placement allowed me creative freedom to research and develop my own software using an emerging technology in blockchain and helped when I returned for my final year to carry out my dissertation research.
The key element to being a student is to get involved in many activities as you can, and get the most out of the placement year. The process of securing a placement helps practise how you would apply for jobs at the end of your degree. It makes you more prepared and demonstrates experience in industry that you may not get otherwise.
Getting involved in activities shows your willingness to engage and gives you the chance to meet new people with different outlooks to certain problems.
