Brad secures his first teaching job

PGCE Secondary Physics student Brad explains how he overcame his initial fears and challenges to land his first role as a Science teacher.

“When I began the PGCE Secondary Science programme, I felt overwhelmed at the thought of simply standing in front of a class. On my second day in school, I finally gathered the courage to tell a student to tuck their shirt in; at the time, it felt like a massive milestone in becoming a teacher. Looking back now after months of planning physics lessons, managing practicals, and at times doubting if I had the stamina to continue, that initial anxiety feels almost laughable.

The journey has certainly had its ups and downs. However, with incredibly supportive tutors and mentors to provide reassurance when my confidence was knocked, I learned to take it one step at a time. I’ve come to realise that teaching isn’t about perfection. When a lesson doesn’t go to plan, the real skill is in reflecting and returning the next day with a positive outlook. By the end of the course, this mindset became second nature. Having now secured my first job, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my training and am excited to continue developing as a Science teacher.”
