Declan Harwood studied with us from 2015 – 2019, achieving a BA (Hons) in Education and PGCE in teacher training.

When visiting an open day, he met with our course leaders and lecturers to discover more about the offering and BA Education course.

“I was unsure about which career path to take in education. After attending an applicant day, I knew it was the right course for me. The lecturers made a real effort to understand my goals and my future ambitions.”

Declan’s experience with course leaders inspired him to be where he is today.

“The lecturers provided a safe environment to challenge the ‘norm’ and gain a deeper understanding of the topics and content being taught. The course enabled me to develop a range of skills, both personal and academically, through rich discussion, debate and presenting opportunities.”

Declan took advantage of our placement opportunities, where he worked in educational settings.

“During my time at the university, I was offered a handful of placement options.  I took opportunities in both primary and secondary school environments which enabled me to put theory into practice, gain much-needed experience and develop my future plans.”

The course also provides trips to consolidate learning and bridge connections between theory and practice.

“The most memorable trip was to a local youth support group. We were able to understand the barriers that the youth face today and how they impact learning. From this, many of my peers were able to gain placements at the establishment and went on to start careers in this field.”
