Luke achieves career ambitions

Luke Hunter, Ecology and Environment Science graduate

“I started my Ecology and Environmental Science degree on the back of a concerted effort to change careers.

After spending some time volunteering and working outdoors, having a natural affinity for conservation, particularly anything avian encouraged me to take the plunge and carve a career in a sector I was passionate about.

I was looking for a course that provided me with a broad baseline knowledge but was also flexible enough to offer me the specific skills needed for a career in practical conservation.

My three years at University of Gloucestershire exposed me to the right people and enhanced my focus – the standard of lecturing was fantastic and from the very beginning, I received advice and encouragement that I continue to reference today.

In particular, modules focusing on Plant Ecology, Avian Biology, Contemporary Issues, Biogeography and Palaeoecology continue to be really valuable.

Since leaving university, I have worked as a Warden for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge, and most recently the National Trust as a Ranger in the Cotswolds. My aim at the start of my career change was to eventually become Ranger and with the support of my personal tutor and the wider Enviromental sciences department, I have been able to achieve this ambition!”
