The move to postgraduate study has been enjoyably challenging and rewarding

Michelle Barden – Health Psychology MSc

We had an introduction to Health Psychology taster session at L5 on my undergraduate degree and I was hooked! I was fascinated by the depth of Health Psychology as a discipline and the varied ways in which it can be applied, stretching way beyond healthcare. Having the option to take a newly designed course was a great opportunity and the support I received from the academic team in terms of ensuring this was the right course for me was an integral part of the decision making process.

It has been quite a journey, new subject areas, new methodologies and new course-mates have made for an experience that had been enjoyably challenging and rewarding. The content links superbly across the modules and includes practical elements and high-profile guest lecturers and so it never feels as if the learning is routine.

At the end of the course, I will be qualified at Stage 1 HCPC towards Health Psychologist status which means I have different options to fully qualify; I’m currently weighing up whether I would like to pursue a PhD and go into research or apply for Stage 2 training via the Professional Doctorate route and go into clinical practice.

I’d definitely recommend this as a course for anyone who is interested deepening their understanding of how psychological, biological and social aspects of health come together and also those who are interested in the impacts of ‘Green Psychology’ and Social Prescribing.
