- Have access to workshops (where relevant, and in partnership with academic staff) from the Careers and Employability team to focus on the placement search
- Have access to placement opportunities advertised by the Careers and Employability team on the UniHub portal and (where relevant) receive opportunities to meet and network with employers providing placement opportunities.
We expect you:
- To secure your placement yourself – the University or Careers and Employability team will not place you in a role (with the exception of Teacher Education and Health and Social Care, where placements are allocated to students)
- To be proactive in making full use of all the support, activities, resources, workshops, and opportunities available through the Careers and Employability team, the wider University, and beyond
- If completing a formal application for placement, to thoroughly research and prepare your applications, gaining advice and support from the Career Studio
- To recognise that once you have verbally accepted a placement offer it is unprofessional to withdraw later without exceptional reasons
- To ensure you complete the required steps of the placement approval process via the Careers Placement Management System (Known as CPMS – the system through which the majority of UoG placements will be managed). This must be done BEFORE your placement starts.
Before your placement starts it is your responsibility to ensure you have considered and planned for the following:

- Employment rights in the country of your placement
- You have the correct VISA requirements in place before travelling and commencing placement
- Access to medical care including GP registrations in your placement country and upon returning to the UK
- Regularly checking the FCO (Foreign Commonwealth Office) advice about the safety of the country your placement is based within and following any advice provided
- You have the correct insurances in place to provide you with maximum protection
- You have checked with your placement provider and completed, if necessary, any security clearance or DBS as requires
- You have accommodation in place before travel
- You have taken any required pre-travel medication. eg courses of vaccinations.
During Placement
You can expect:
- To be briefed by the Module Tutor on all key aspects of your placement relating to assessment and professional conduct
- For 12-month placements, to be allocated a Visiting Tutor (member of the academic team). In cases where a personal visit is not possible you should expect contact via email, phone, Teams and/or Skype
- To access advice from the Career Studio on how to align your placement experience with your career plan
- For any issues that arise during placement, you should email [email protected] and your Module Tutor (and Visiting Tutor, if applicable) to make them aware of the issue that has arisen as quickly as possible. Your email will then be assigned to the most appropriate Careers and Employability team member to help, and they will contact you directly to offer support/help to resolve the issue
- Please note, this is within office hours – if you experience a significant emergency outside of office hours, please call Campus Security on 01242 714934, available 24 hours a day, who will help to link you with appropriate support (this is not for general issues and non-emergencies)
- If your emergency requires the emergency services, please make sure you call them immediately.
We expect you:
- To complete the relevant placement approval process via CPMS and ensure your placement has been approved before your placement starts
- For 12-month placements, to attend any final Placement Briefings before your placement commences, and mid-placement conferences organised by your academic community
