“The patience and understanding of the tutors, their practical clinical experience and their open-door policy for us to ask for help at any time is a unique experience to me.”

International student Odukenle from Nigeria is among the first cohort of Adult Nursing students at University of Gloucestershire.

“I have no background of healthcare knowledge but the facilities at the university exposed me to various techniques and equipment that I then used during placement. This gave me confidence and experience to ask constructive questions from my mentor and other nurses during my placement.

I have been on three different placements which has provided various practical clinical experiences. My first placement was at Dean Neurological Centre where I learnt about Tracheostomy and PEG feeding together with management of other neurological diseases. My second placement was at Dixton Ward and third placement was in Endoscopy Department both in Cheltenham General Hospital.

The university is very concerned about students’ wellbeing and activities such as Pilates are included in the course. Nursing activities involve a lot of physical actions, the Pilates classes help improve students’ flexibility and increase muscle strength making us physically fit for our placements.”
