Performing Arts (Level 6) BA (Hons)

University of Gloucestershire

What is Performing Arts (Level 6) BA (Hons)?

This course brings together the ‘triple threat’ of singing, dancing and acting. Develop acting techniques for the stage and strengthen your voice and singing in our Showcase and Contemporary Music Theatres Modules working in professional performance spaces.

You’ll make the most of performances in site-specific spaces such as Gloucester Cathedral, the bustling Gloucester Docks, and the Wilson Art Gallery. You’ll work in professional theatre venues such as the Everyman Studio and the Playhouse Theatre in Cheltenham.

You’ll learn in our purpose-built ‘2million Performing Arts and Events Centre at Oxstalls campus. These facilities include a dance studio with a harlequin-sprung floor, full lighting rig and sound, an acoustically designed music and singing room, a drama studio and a multi-media studio.

Study style

You’ll learn from lecturers who are performing arts professional directors, musical directors and actors, having worked with organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. Tutors have been or are still working in the professional arena and facilitate students to a ‘real world’ experience. With live performance opportunities you’ll gain plenty of experience, working in real theatres with industry experts. Students work with Strike a Light and Cheltenham Festivals and meet and network with industry professionals.

High levels of contact time with tutors each week during term time combine with intensive practical rehearsal periods for production to help support you to graduate career-ready.

Careers

Students regularly perform at the internationally renowned Edinburgh Fringe arts festival, gaining invaluable experience and inspiration from other cutting-edge work. It’s your chance to meet other performers and practitioners and undertake a full performance week of your own show. August 2018 saw students perform a version of Treasure Island that received a 4* review and was described by the host venue as “A colourful, explosive adventure and a pleasure to watch”.

The numerous opportunities to gain practical experience during the degree will ensure you graduate with all the skills to pursue a rewarding career in the performing arts. Career pathways include becoming an actor, dancer, singer and teacher.

Achieve additional dance qualifications

Graduate a step ahead by achieving ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) awards alongside your course. We are the only UK university to offer this internationally-recognised dance accreditation as part of your study.

Gain experience through live theatre performances

Work within theatre settings including Everyman and Playhouse theatres in Cheltenham with professional directors, designers and technicians. Work also takes place within site specific venues such as the Wilson Gallery in Cheltenham and the National Trust’s Croome Park.

We alternate Edinburgh Festival performances with our New York trip, so students studying with us for only one year will only be able to participate in one of these.

"The facilities are really versatile and can be shaped around the performance."

“To have such spaces where you can do acting, singing and dancing all in one building really helps your confidence and lets you focus on learning new skills.”
