Sarah Bowden

Research Fellow in Art

I am a collaborative curator with a particular interest in experimental and research-based artistic practices. It’s a great privilege to programme exhibitions and events with and for students and public audiences at UoG and to bring these alive through workshops and discussion.

Biography

Sarah Bowden is a Research Fellow and curator at the University of Gloucestershire, with a background in sculpture and spatial practice. In her curatorial practice, Sarah co-ordinates public exhibitions, artist residencies, and symposia with local, national and international practitioners, community groups, and students.

Sarah’s research examines the role of the gallery and creative practice in public life and discourse. In 2016 she founded We Create arts action group with residents in St Peter’s and St Paul’s in the north of Cheltenham, to develop projects with contemporary artists that connect people with everyday creativity and explore the area’s heritage.

Prior to joining UoG, Sarah founded and directed MEANTIME, an artist residency programme and event venue in Cheltenham town centre. Between 2007 and 2014 MEANTIME hosted more than 120 artists’ residencies, providing time and space for free experimentation within a discursive framework.

Sarah is Chair of the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust CIO, co-director of We Create Cheltenham CIC, co-founder of Cheltenham Arts Network and member of Cheltenham’s Culture Board and Public Art Panel.

Sarah works on Research Degree supervision and her research interests include research-as-practice, self-organisation/DIY/DIT, everyday creativity, peer learning, workshopping, night school, collaboration, participation and co-creation, community land art, ethics, and environmental debt.
