Dr Fern Baker

RESEARCH FELLOW (EU GRANT)

Fern’s research interests include sustainable agriculture, environmental science, human behaviour and protein alternatives.

Biography

Fern joined CCRI at the beginning of 2026. She has a particular interest in sustainable agriculture, human behaviour, and ensuring inclusivity in her approach through co-design. Fern is working on two Horizon Europe project’s: EUROSION and TRAILS4SOIL. The projects aim to improve soil quality and assist the movement towards sustainable farming and ultimately, a sustainable future. Fern is working collaboratively with the relevant parties across Europe, facilitating effective knowledge-exchange for meaningful impact.

Fern completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham within the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science. Her PhD focussed on evaluating strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from dairy production systems. Fern’s work highlighted multiple pathways to achieve a Net Zero dairy farm in the UK by 2050. Alongside completing her PhD, Fern became a Lecturer in Sustainability at Bournemouth University, specialising in Sustainable Agriculture and obtained a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Fern also furthered her research during this time, such as securing funding from the Agri-Food Network (AFN), to collaboratively investigate insects as an alternative source of protein in the UK, by co-designing recipes with university students.

Her research skills include mixed methods research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, R Programming Language, SPSS, NVivo, interviewing, co-design and conducting online survey questionnaires.
